Floyd Mayweather to face grandson of notorious mafia boss in next bout

Floyd Mayweather is set to face professional fighter, John Gotti III, the grandson of infamous mafia boss John Gotti, in his next money-spinning exhibition bout. The pair will square off on June 11 in Sunrise, Florida in an event billed as “Last Name Matters”.

An official press conference is scheduled to take place on Thursday at The Gabriel Miami Downtown, Curio Collection by Hilton. The fight event will then be hosted at the FLA Live Arena down the road.

Mayweather is dedicating the event in loving memory of Marikit “Kitchie” Laurico, his longtime assistant who passed away suddenly in April. His opponent, Gotti III, has competed professionally as both a boxer and MMA fighter.

The 30-year-old started off in MMA, compiling a 5-1 record in the sport before making the transition to the squared circle in 2022 where he is 2-0. Gotti III, is also the grandson of famous New York mobster Gotti, better known as ‘Teflon Don’.

The Italian-American gangster Gotti was the notorious leader of the Gambino crime family during the 1980s and 1990s. At his peak, Gotti was one of the most powerful and dangerous mafia bosses in the United States and was involved in many high-profile crime cases.

Most notably for his part in the largest unrecovered cash robbery in history, the infamous Lufthansa Heist at Kennedy Airport. Gotti was eventually caught and convicted on 14 accounts of conspiracy to commit murder and racketeering in 1992.

After being found guilty of the charges he was given life imprisonment and died behind bars in 2002. The number of rounds, weight and rules for Mayweather vs Gotti III are yet to be announced with further details on the bout expected at tomorrow’s launch press event.
