Flight attendant says ‘never wear sandals’ if you want a free upgrade
Former flight attendant Celina Bedding exclusively talked to Express.co.uk about the clothes passengers should “avoid” if they want to get an upgrade for free.
The crew member revealed that casual items of clothing should be avoided at all costs, including leggings and flip flops.
This is because flight attendants are more likely to move those passengers who “dress smarter” to first class.
Celina explained that if the crew wants to upgrade a passenger, “they will look for people who they understand won’t disturb the other passengers that actually paid for those expensive seats”.
She recommended holidaymakers opt for a comfortable but not too relaxed look. For instance, passengers could wear a blazer and jeans, she suggested.

The flight attendant opined that “casual work or business attire” is also a good option, but when going on holiday during the hot summer months, “long dresses always look nice”.
According to the crew member, travellers should “avoid” certain types of shoes including open-toed shoes, sandals and flip-flops.
In terms of clothing, passengers should stay away from “sweatpants” and “never wear leggings,” she explained.
Travel experts at Forbes Advisor agreed and said that “to increase the chances of being upgraded on a flight” passengers should “wear to impress the crew”.
They explained: “While dressing in your finest clothes is no guarantee for an upgrade, a smart outfit will certainly enhance your chances of being chosen.
“As first-class passengers often dress smart, airlines will want to ensure anyone they bump to first class looks the part”.
Although holidaymakers should not “feel the need to dress in anything extravagant,” they recommended avoiding certain items of clothing that are too casual including “flip flops and cargo shorts”.
Passengers could opt for smart casual outfits such as jeans, a jumper or a shirt, and flat shoes, the travel gurus suggested.
Another effective way to get a free upgrade on board, according to an American flight attendant, is having a nice gesture with the crew by bringing sweets and chocolates – that could be Toblerone from the terminal or a Starbucks gift card.
