Flashpoint Beyond Covers Reveal the Return of DC’s Weirdest Superman
Flashpoint Batman is set to return in an all-new title, and new artwork reveals that he will not be the only one brought back from 2011’s Flashpoint.
Flashpoint Beyond reveals the return of one of DC Comics’ strangest Supermen.
When Barry Allen, the Flash, went back in time to save his mother, he created the alternate Flashpoint timeline, where all of our favorite DC heroes led different lives — or were other people entirely. For the Kryptonian Kal-El, he never grew up as farm boy Clark Kent. Instead, his spaceship crash-landed in the heart of Metropolis as opposed to the fields of Smallville, where he was captured by the United States government and experimented on. As revealed by ComicBook.com, a cover for Flashpoint Beyond #3 shows that Subject One (Kal-El) will be returning for the upcoming title.

- The DC event of 2022 continues! Thomas Wayne’s investigation into the Clockwork Killer goes sideways when he is confronted by a deadly alien invader the world knows as…Project: Superman? But what’s happened to the Kryptonian and Krypton in the World of Flashpoint? Will Thomas Wayne do what he has to in order to stop Superman-or has he changed? And what are those strange earthquakes now erupting across reality?
The artwork is a clear homage to the cover for Batman #612 made by Jim Lee, Scott Williams and Alex Sinclair. That issue was the fifth part in the iconic Batman: Hush storyline, featuring a battle between Batman and a mind-controlled Superman. However, Thomas Wayne and Subject One are quite different from the Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent most fans will recognize. According to the solicitation for the issue, Flashpoint Batman will come face-to-face with Subject One or Project: Superman in the series’ third issue, with the Kryptonian described as a “deadly alien invader.”
While Subject One has not been seen much in comics lately, Flashpoint Batman has been thrust further into the main Multiverse in series like Batman (during writer Tom King’s run), Infinite Frontier and Justice League Incarnate. The latter two titles saw Thomas Wayne join Justice League Incarnate alongside heroes like President Superman and Doctor Multiverse, but after succumbing to the Great Darkness in Justice League Incarnate #4, he was seemingly killed by Darkseid. He has been believed to be dead before though, such as was the case with “The Button” crossover between Batman and The Flash in 2017.
Flashpoint Batman will be leading Flashpoint Beyond, which is set to launch with Flashpoint Beyond #0 on April 5. The original Flashpoint author Geoff Johns will return to write the series alongside writers Jeremy Adams (The Flash) and Tim Sheridan (Teen Titans Academy), with artists like Xermánico and Eduardo Risso contributing to the title. Following Issue #0, the series will last for a limited six issues, with Flashpoint Beyond #3 and the Project: Superman cover going on sale May 17.
In addition to Flashpoint Beyond, DC has also announced another major event for 2022: Dark Crisis. Spinning out of Justice League #75 — “The Death of the Justice League” — the event will explore how legacy characters like Superman (Jon Kent) and Yara Flor (Wonder Girl) handle their very own crisis-level event. While Flashpoint Beyond launches in April, Dark Crisis kicks off with a Free Comic Book Day special issue on May 7, 2022.
