Five key questions about Threads and your data answered
Among the 100 million are many Twitter users frustrated with the constant tinkering with the microblogging platform since Musk took over. In response, Musk has taken potshots at Meta chief Mark Zuckerberg and threatened to sue the company for breaching intellectual property rights and copyright claims.
While Threads’ growth has been rapid, it comes with its own set of flaws. One of them is that users cannot fully delete the data of their Threads accounts without deleting their Instagram account as well.
ETtech tries to answer some of the questions around Threads and your data stored by the social media app.
Can you delete your Threads account without deleting your Instagram account?
There were several reports that said deleting the Threads account can only happen if you delete your Instagram account, and they are all true. “Since Threads is powered by Instagram, in order to delete your Threads profile and data, you will have to delete your Instagram account,” reads a note on Instagram.

How can you remove/deactivate your Threads account without deleting your Instagram account?Go to your profile, navigate to the settings page and deactivate your profile. If you deactivate your profile, your posts and interactions with others’ posts won’t be visible on Threads until you reactivate it, and this will also not delete your Threads data or affect your Instagram account.
This essentially means that by deactivating your Threads profile, you hide your profile and content from being visible on Threads. You also have the option to delete individual posts without deleting your Instagram account.
However, Instagram is looking into this. “Threads is powered by Instagram, so right now it is just one account, but we’re looking into a way to delete your Threads account separately,” Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram said in a Threads post.
What happens to your data on Threads?
Like any other consumer facing application, the servers of Threads and Meta will retain your data unless you fully delete it.
According to Threads terms of use, when you delete your Threads profile, your content and profile will be hidden from view by other users, but it will remain on the Threads servers. Threads content will be deleted from the servers if you delete it or your Instagram account.
Even if you choose to delete your Instagram account, deletion of your Threads content from the servers may not occur for 90 days.
Is Threads collecting a lot of data?
Threads gathers user data across 25 different categories, including sensitive information that Twitter does not collect. A glance at the Play Store reveals that Threads collects data related to your app usage, installed applications, in-app search history, web browsing activities, calendar events, contacts, voice or sound recordings, music files, different audio files, photos, videos, SMS messages, in-app communications, emails, payment card information, bank account details, and even financial data.
How have users responded to Threads?
The initial response to Threads has been rousing, as is evident from the 100 million sign-ups in less than a week. But, many users are not happy.
One user said, “Deactivating Threads without deleting Instagram? That’s like trying to untie a knot without any loose ends. Looks like they’re stitched together for good!”
“That’s how they can keep their numbers up when people check it out and then abandon it to go back to Twitter,” said another user.
