Five affordable cars you’ve probably never heard of – and it could save £1000s

WITH the current cost-of-living crisis not getting better any time soon, deciding on your next choice of motor just got that bit harder.

Car prices are spiralling upwards and interest rates are also climbing, so it’s hard to see an affordable option that won’t eat into your budget too much.

It’s important that buyers know exactly what’s on offer, from well-known brands to lesser known manufacturers, so that you can make the best choice that’s right for you.

Handily, we’ve put together a list of five more affordable cars – that you may never have even heard of – that shouldn’t break the bank.

KGM Tivoli – £20,000 approx.

SsangYong was bought by another Korean firm KG Group back in 2022 – saving it from expected liquidation.

The budget car maker is now on its way back, with its motors badged as KGM.

The updated Tivoli is expected to launch here in the UK around September, going up against rivals like the MG ZS and Suzuki Vitara.

As well as a competitive sticker price, there are sure to be plenty of offers in place and big discounts if you’re prepare to haggle.

BYD Dolphin – £25,500 approx.

Chinese manufacturer BYD (Build Your Dreams) has revealed UK pricing for its new small car – while deliveries should be available from the end of this year. 

The new Dolphin starts from £25,490 in the UK – which makes it one of the cheapest electric cars on sale today.

Citroen Ami Buggy – £10,495 approx.

You may have heard of the dinky Citroen Ami, but did you know there’s an off-road inspired version called the Buggy?

Prices start from £10,495, but as there’s only 40 examples coming to the UK you’ll need to be quick.

Technical details remain the same as the standard Ami, with a 5.5kWh battery giving a top speed of 28mph and a maximum range of 46 miles.

GWM ORA Funky Cat – £31,000 approx.

Don’t be put off by the Funky Cat’s higher price tag – the manufacturer is currently offering personal leasing (PCH) deals for its small EV, starting from £239 a month.

Cheaper models could well join the lineup in the future, too.

One downside, though, is that there’s currently a limited dealer network – although the manufacturer has plans to grow quickly.

Dacia Sandero Stepway – £17,645 approx.

You may have already heard of Dacia, and possibly even its Sandero supermini.

But you may not be aware that the Sandero has a more rugged, bigger brother called the Stepway.

It offers slightly more room and off-roader style than the standard Sandero, while Dacia offers leasing deals from £229 per month.
