First turn tangle takes out nearly half the field

It took just a matter of seconds for the carnage to kick off in the second S5000 race at Winton Motor Raceway.

A four-car pile-up took out nearly half the field at turn one after a costly mistake by third place starter Blake Purdie.

The youngster locked up into turn one and drove into the side of second place starter Cooper Webster, who spun as a result.

Jordan Boys checked up to avoid Purdie, copping a whack from Winston Smith.

Damage to Purdies’s car meant he couldn’t steer and ended up clattering into Mark Rosser.

Despite copping a hit, Boys managed to continue with only a broken front wing to show for it.

All told, it was Webster, Purdie, Smith, and Rosser who were all taken out in the melee.

“It was just that cold tyre,” said Trans Am racer and Stan Sport commentator James Moffat.

“Purdie got a blinding start, and was having a sniff at the race lead and locked that left front and unfortunately that careered him into the side of his teammate.”

Once the race resumed, it was an otherwise uneventful affair.

Joey Mawson cleared out to win by 3.7 seconds over James Golding, who had started from third-to-last.

Aaron Cameron was on course for second place until he made a mistake, which gifted Golding the place.

The final S5000 race gets underway at 1:55pm.
