Firefly Brand New Verse cast

Firefly: Brand New ‘Verse has been a welcome return to the world of Firefly. Taking place twenty years after the events of Serenity, the series primarily focuses on Emma, the daughter of Zoë and Wash from the original series. Alongside the new crewmates of Lu Bao and Salo, the pair have kept the Serenity flying. Many of the other crew members have made lives for themselves away from the ship, while some (such as Jayne and Mal) never formally appear in the series. Things are complicated though when a job from Inara leads them to find Rasalia — a woman from Earth centuries earlier. Blue Sun wants her due to her potential link to an ark from Earth that went missing — potentially containing lost technology and maps to the greater galaxy.

Ultimately, most of the crew is captured by Alexis Klef, who tries to convince Zoë to help her regain the crew. Emma and Lu Bao escape aboard the Serenity and find River hiding in a station surrounded by meteors along with the young Shakti (who River at least considers a daughter, if not actually being her mother). They reach the ark and decide to use it as leverage to save their friends and family. Along with Inara’s help — who is on the ship as Klef’s companion — the group escape, with Shakti saving the group from the Blue Hands with her own apparent telekinetic abilities. The crew all escape — along with wiping all the data from the ark, preventing the Blue Sun corporation from knowing where to travel in the greater universe.

Afterward, most of the group return to their respective homes — but with their bonds reaffirmed by their newest adventures together. Meanwhile, Zoë makes Emma the official captain of the Serenity, remaining on as her first mate. However, as Emma points out, Blue Sun will be looking for them for revenge for their recent actions — meaning they’ll have to remain away from the core-worlds for a time. Emma, Zoë, Lu Bao, Salo and Rasalia decide to explore the galaxy and do a bit of good for the universe — with the map to the uncharted space in their possession, setting them up to explore the galaxy while carrying a very valuable map that Blue Sun might want to claim going forward. It’s a fun ending for the story, and it sets the stage for any future adventures this new Serenity Crew might elect to go on.

There are plenty of directions the series could go now, especially considering the Blue Sun will be chasing them similar to the way they followed after River and Simon in the original Firefly. The crew could elect to explore the uncharted areas of space, setting up further adventures. There are also plenty of lingering threads that could be explored — including the supposedly tragic fate of Mal, the still unrevealed path that Jayne took in the galaxy after Serenity, and the full story behind Shakti’s origins. While this may be the final issue of Firefly: Brand New ‘Verse, it’s not an ending by a long-shot, and it opens up plenty of new stories for the franchise to explore in the future.
