Fiona Phillips shares son’s moving reaction to Alzheimer’s diagnosis
Fiona Phillips has shared how her sons, Nat, 24 and Mackenzie, 21, have been “very sweet” since she told them about her heartbreaking Alzheimer’s diagnosis.
The GMTV star, 62, said: “The boys haven’t said much about it but they are very sweet.
“Mackenzie, who’s still living at home, just says things like, ‘Don’t worry about tidying up Mum, I’ll do that, you rest.’ I guess that’s his way of showing he cares. They are lovely boys,” she told The Mirror.
Addressing her worry about how the cruel disease will take its toll, Fiona added: “I do worry about becoming a hopeless old lady not able to do anything for myself.
“I am trying to keep smiling and getting on with things but it is a bloody horrible disease.”
Fiona, who is married to This Morning editor Martin Frizell, had hidden her illness from her boys following her diagnosis last year.
But now, with news of her health battle being made public, Fiona agreed that her sons had to be told despite her initial reluctance.
She explained to the aforementioned publication: “I just didn’t want to make a big thing out of it where we all sit down as a family and announce we’ve got something to tell them.
“And I was worried they might be embarrassed in front of their friends or treat me in a different way. And it’s not like I’m doing anything out of character.”
With Alzheimer’s running through her family, Fiona and Martin have had a blood test to check whether her boys may have inherited the disease.
Martin continued to the publication: “We wanted to know in case we needed to prepare the boys to make some difficult decisions later in life.
“When the results came back as negative it was a huge moment – such an enormous sense of relief.
“There’s no Alzheimer’s on my side of the family and thank goodness it seems the boys have not inherited from Fiona’s side of the family.”
