Final hole disaster ruins Scott’s chance to lead major

Adam Scott has caused a stir with his outfit choice in round one of the PGA Championship but it was his final hole double bogey at Oak Hill that stole the headlines, ruining the Aussie’s chance to share the clubhouse lead.

Scott completed his round just before the siren sounded to suspend play due to darkness, and he may wish the siren went off as soon as he’d putted at the 17th after a disastrous effort to save par out of the greenside bunker at 18.

The 42-year-old was looking like he could have a share of the clubhouse lead, however a double-bogey 6 on the final hole meant he now sits sixth after signing his card for a two-under 68.

Thirty-four-year-old Eric Cole, playing in just his second major, leads after he made six birdies and just a single bogey over his first 14 holes to finish five-under.

Scott is the leading Australian at the event ahead of Cam Davis (+1), Cameron Smith (+2) and Min Woo Lee, while Jason Day had a shocking day, hitting six-over to finish with a 76.

Scott joined the leaders with a birdie on the 14th hole but unravelled late in the day, missing a chance to take the outright lead on the 16th before capitulating at the 18th.

LIV Golf stars Bryson DeChambeau and Dustin Johnson are also among the leading pack with the former edging close to Cole in second with a four-under par round.

Johnson is equal third with three-under-par.

Masters champion and world No.1 Jon Rahm endured his worst opening round at a major since the 2018 US Open, posting a 6-over 76. Rahm birdied his first and last holes but had six bogeys and a double bogey in between.
