Final days of Gogglebox star Di Kershaw revealed

The grieving husband of late Gogglebox favourite Di Kershaw has revealed how his wife opted to end her life “earlier rather than later”, partly because she didn’t want to put her family through watching her treatment.

The 77-year-old – one-half of the couple Mick and Di, who’ve been on the show since season one – died over the weekend after a short battle with throat cancer.

Mick, who won’t return to the program when it begins shooting next month, revealed his wife kept her diagnosis mostly private, having been treated for nine weeks at Sydney’s St Vincent’s Hospital in Darlinghurst before being shifted to nearby Sacred Heart Hospice, where she passed away after two weeks.

The 80-year-old told Daily Mail Australia that Di was being fed intravenously in her final days, which she spent surrounded by loved ones.

“The cancer spread and was inoperable. The only alternative to that was chemo or radiation but she was far too weak to be put through that,” he said.

“She would have hated to sit around here for six months being incapacitated. So she made the decision to end it earlier rather than later.

“Part of that decision was thinking about us. A big part of that decision was not wanting to put us through that.”

He revealed the couple were “having a normal conversation” when they were approached by a scout for EndemolShine – the makers of Gogglebox – at the opening of an art exhibition in Paddington.

“We seized the opportunity – it was a terrific diversion. What else would we be doing?” he said.

Di and Mick had been married for more than 50 years and were indigenous art dealers.

Fond of a white wine and never afraid to give her opinion, Di was undoubtedly one of the show’s best-loved personalities.

Her sharp tongue once even extended to her former Gogglebox castmate, Angie Kent, who she watched appear on various other reality programs after leaving the show.

A joint statement from FOXTEL, Network 10, and Endemol Shine Australia, confirmed the news on Monday.

The pair’s Gogglebox bio gave fans a little more insight into their history together.

“Di, a former model, convinced Mick to give up his high-flying career as an advertising executive in order to follow their passion for art. They opened their own art gallery and dealership and 30-years later, the business is still going strong,” it read.
