Ferdinand ramps up Kane to Man Utd speculation with private chat claim

Manchester United icon Rio Ferdinand has added further fuel to the fire over a potential Harry Kane transfer to Old Trafford, as the England captain faced Erik ten Hag’s side on Thursday. The BT Sport pundit suggested that talks should be taking place during the game as the 29-year-old striker has less than 18 months left on his contract in north London and could be on the move this summer.

Ten Hag is reportedly hopeful that United can land him a marquee striker by the beginning of pre-season this summer, as Kane alongside Napoli’s Victor Osimhen and Benfica forward Goncalo Ramos head the shortlist.

United are said to be hopeful that talks can commence shortly regarding a potential Kane transfer, though are aware that Tottenham chief Daniel Levy is a tough negotiator and will attempt to keep his star man in north London beyond this summer.

Ferdinand believes that in order for United to have a better chance of landing Kane, they should begin negotiations at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Thursday during the game. “If there aren’t conversations going on in the corridors of power at Manchester United here and Mr Daniel Levy here about this man, I’d be very surprised,” Ferdinand told BT Sport.

“That’s why I’m saying set it up now before the season even finishes. You look at the situation of Spurs, we spent how long on this programme so far talking about Spurs and how much turmoil they’re in here? Man United have got to be looking at that and thinking get it done now.”

Reports had suggested that United were reluctant to play games over a potential move for Levy’s talisman, as rivals Manchester City previously chased the 29-year-old for the entirety of the 2021 summer transfer window to no avail – but then did land Erling Haaland the next year.

Levy clearly believes that Kane can win a trophy at Spurs, something he will likely reiterated with the striker as he attempts to tie him down to a long-term contract this summer.

Speaking in a rare interview at The Cambridge Union in March, Levy said: “[Kane] can absolutely win a trophy at Spurs. But being a legend is also important. The fact that he’s top scorer of Tottenham Hotspur – he’s making history. I hope one day that there is a statue of Harry Kane outside our stadium.

“Am I happy we haven’t won more than one trophy in the past 15 years? Absolutely not. But I also think we’ve had some fantastic times and been in the Champions League a number of times.”
