Female royals to don specific jewellery item for Queen’s funeral

As per tradition, the royals will be donning black mourning clothes for the Queen’s funeral, and accessories will be minimal. Although understated, female royals will be allowed to wear earrings, necklaces, and bracelets. One piece of jewellery will, however, stand out in particular.

Female members of the Royal Family are all likely to wear pearls to the funeral because of the special meaning behind the gleaming gemstone.

Pearls were favoured by the late monarch and she was rarely seen without her three-stranded pearl necklace and a pair of pearl earrings. Therefore, if worn at the funeral, pearls would be a clear nod to Her Majesty and a significant tribute.

But there is another reason why the female royals are likely to don pearls – and this dates back to the Victorian age.

Celebrity stylist Miranda Holder explained: “The Queen’s funeral is no place for flashy jewellery, and we definitely won’t be seeing too many diamonds, which are really meant to be reserved for after 6pm within the Royal Family.

As well as being a symbol for tears, pearls represent power and status.

Arseniy Budrevich, founder of Budrevich Fine Jewellery Studio, said: “Pearls have been associated with class, elegance and sophistication since the Ptolemaic dynasty in ancient Egypt, where the royal family wore pearls to show their status.

“This tradition was then passed down through the holy Roman empire to the French monarchs who carried it into fashion in the middle ages, where it was subsequently dispersed through Europe. This is when the British empire picked up the style.

“The Royal Family wears pearls to represent the aristocratic virtues of liberality, magnificence and generosity. They also symbolise purity and chastity.

“The Queen was most often shown wearing pearls, usually wearing one of her sublime pearl necklaces with matching pearl brooch and earrings. Kate Middleton has also been seen sporting this classy and classic look.”

Female royals have already worn pearls over the last few days, since the Queen’s death on September 8.

While visiting Cardiff on Friday, September 16, Queen Camilla donned the peardrop pearls she is often seen wearing.

Surprisingly, these earrings are clip-ons as Camilla has never had her ears pierced.

Speaking to British Vogue earlier this year, the Queen Consort said: “You know the nice thing about being a grandmother is that you can spoil them occasionally, give them more of the things that their parents forbid them to have.

“The girls are beginning to get into clothes and make-up and, you know, it’s rather frightening when you see them, coming out with pierced ears and a lot of new make-up and funny coloured hair and stuff.

“[The grandchildren] will try to persuade me, but nothing’s going to pierce my ears,” she added.

Camilla matched her pearl earrings with a leek-shaped silver brooch, which was a clear tribute to Wales and its people given that the leek is the country’s national symbol.
