Tomorrow’s Marsh Cup match at the MCG will count as James Pattinson’s one-match suspension, even if predicted bad weather forces the match to be abandoned without a single ball being bowled.
Victoria is scheduled to play New South Wales in Melbourne, but the Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting a 100 per cent chance of rain tomorrow, with a top temperature of just 15 degrees and up to 30mm of rain expected.
Pattinson was fined his entire match fee, and suspended for one match, following an incident on the final day of this week’s Sheffield Shield match, when he threw a ball which struck Blues opener Daniel Hughes on the foot.
Pattinson had collected the ball in his follow-through when he hurled it in the direction of the stumps, but instead collected Hughes, who threw his bat and helmet away in disgust.
“Pattinson was charged and found guilty under Article 2.7 of the code for throwing a ball at or near a player in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during a match,” Cricket Australia said in a statement.
But even if tomorrow’s match is completely washed out, Wide World of Sports has been given confirmation it would still constitute Pattinson’s ban.
That’s because players are paid for abandoned matches, and Pattinson’s suspension means he won’t be eligible to be paid for the game.
Pattinson last month announced his retirement from Test cricket.
Tomorrow’s match will be the first Marsh Cup match for the season for both Victoria and New South Wales. Western Australia currently leads the competition, having won two of its three matches.
