Fantastic Four Preview Takes Us closer to Reed Richards’ Inevitable Death
A preview for Marvel’s Fantastic Four #42 shows Reed Richards making an impossible decision and drawing closer to his inevitable death.
The preview for the upcoming Fantastic Four #42 sees Reed Richards initiate a mysterious ‘Protocol Zero’ safeguard which indicates bad things are in store for him and other Marvel Universe characters.
In the Fantastic Four #42 preview provided by Marvel, Reed and the Thing are off-planet battling the Reckoning with She-Hulk and Jack of Hearts while, back in New York City, other alien warlords have made their way into the Baxter Building. Inside the Fantastic Four’s headquarters at the time of the attack are Ben Grimm’s partner, Alicia, and children, along with Reed’s children and others. They send out a distress call to Mister Fantastic, who is then given no choice but to activate something called “Protocol Zero.”
While the preview doesn’t explain what Protocol Zero does, there are indications that serious damage has been done and that someone — perhaps those inside the Baxter Building — could be in harm’s way because of the fallout. Mister Fantastic has a pained look in his eye as his children tell him “we love you, dad” and “when you see mom, tell her we –” after the protocol is initiated.
Reed has been inching closer and closer to death ever since he uploaded the entire knowledge of Utau, the Watcher whose home was formerly on Earth’s moon until it was destroyed by the Reckoning, into his brain. Since then, Reed has possessed the knowledge of the Watchers, but his body has quickly begun deteriorating to the point where he now only has three days to live. Depending on the catastrophic nature of whatever Protocol Zero does, it could take a heavy emotional toll that expedites the process.
The cover art for Fantastic Four #42 shows a panicked Reed being held down by the Thing, further indicating that Protocol Zero might have caused some level of massive damage back on Earth. Prior to the protocol’s initiation, the Thing was injured in battle when fighting a Reckoning figure named Rapture, who wielded a lightsaber-looking weapon that can cut through Vibranium and Adamantium. The ongoing Fantastic Four series also recently brought back Galactus with a powerful Asgardian upgrade in an effort to defeat the Reckoning. Now operating under the name “the Destruction,” Silver Surfer is leading the almighty being to help turn the tides of the war.
Fantastic Four #42 comes from writer Dan Slott, artist Rachael Stott, color artists Jesus Aburtov and Erick Arciniega and letterer VC’s Joe Caramagna, with cover art by Cafu and variant cover art by Michael Allred, Laura Allred and R.B. Silva. The issue releases on April 6.
