Fans Theorize Pokemon Scarlet Violet’s Ghost Tera Could Be A Reference To Gen 1

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet have brought the brand new Tera forms to the Pokemon world, and some fans realized the game’s Ghost Tera looks fairly familiar. The upcoming Pokemon Scarlet & Violet games made a massive splash with the release of their latest trailers. Showing not just new Legendaries, characters, and region environments, the game also introduced a brand new mechanic: Tera forms.

These Tera forms, or terastal forms, are an entirely new approach to Pokemon battling. With 18 total different forms paralleling the different Pokemon Types, these Tera forms boost Pokemon abilities and even change Types! One particular Tera form caught the eye of some Pokemon fans – the Ghost Tera.

Looking more closely at the Ghost Tera, fans quickly put together two and two – it looks strikingly similar to the Gen 1 sprite of the ghost of Cubone’s mother.

Pokemon Scarlet Violet’s Ghost Tera – Generic Ghost Or Gen 1 Throwback?

As previously mentioned, Tera forms are entirely new to the Pokemon franchise. The new form transforms Pokemon, changing their body into crystal and adorning them with a massive thematic headpiece. It’s a phenomenon that is unique to the Paldea region, allowing even previous generation Pokemon like Pikachu to morph.

Most importantly, the Tera/terastal form allows Pokemon to change their typical typing. For example, an Eevee is regularly a Normal type Pokemon; however, after terastallizing, the Eevee could have a Flying Tera type. This phenomenon is set to completely change how Pokemon battle strategy works, as Pokemon will now have access to moves they never have before!

Below, one fan pit the Ghost Tera headpiece alongside an old Gen 1 sprite, showing that the Ghost Tera could be a reference to an old favorite:

The similarities are obvious – triangular eyes, wide open mouth, and paw-like bent hands. There’s no doubt that the Ghost Tera takes some design inspiration from the Gen 1 ghost. Additionally the sprite is actually the ghost of Cubone’s mom. Haunting the citizens of the Lavender Town Pokemon Tower in Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow, the female Marowak urges players to “Get out…!

It is also important to note that the Pokemon games following the Gen 1 series have also incorporated this ghostly icon. If players go to the Pokemon Tower without a Silph Scope, many of the ghost encounters there will bear a similar icon. Still, this Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Ghost Tera form is a neat callback to a recurring reference!

Finally g,iven the size of these Tera form headpieces, it’s nearly impossible to miss this ghost face. Many fans have also speculated that the large crystal headpieces take inspiration from Spanish fiestas de carnaval (carnivals). Boasting big elaborate feathered headdresses and gorgeous headpieces, it’s easy to see where the design parallels are!

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet will launch for the Switch later this year, on November 18, 2022.
