Fans shocked as Adrian Dunbar sings in new detective show Ridley: ‘He can sing!’
Adrian Dunbar’s new detective show Ridley got audiences talking about one thing: the singing.
The crime drama debuted on ITV on Sunday night with the first of four weekly episodes, each two hours long, and viewers were slightly surprised to say the least at one central feature of the show.
Ridley, starring Line Of Duty icon Adrian as the titular character, is essentially your run-of-the-mill detective drama: a stoic main character with a tragic back story, a murder mystery and an ominous setting.
There’s one thing that sets it apart however – Alex Ridley is a ‘singing detective,’ and several times in the first episode he belts out a tune.
Viewers weren’t exactly blown away by the first episode, with some complaining it moved slowly and others labeling it predictable, while more were excited for the episodes ahead.
But the singing element got everyone talking – mainly as audiences were surprised that, well, Adrian really can sing.
Fans flocked to Twitter during the show commenting Adrian’s renditions of The Mountains of Mourne and Coles Corner, with one person saying it ‘made my Sunday night.’
‘Wow, Adrian Dunbar singing a fabulous version of #ColesCorner #RichardHawley love it,’ another said.
One wrote that they were ‘loving’ Adrian’s singing voice ad that the ‘excellent’ drama had them ‘hooked,’ while another said his singing ‘melted my heart.’
Another referenced a fan-favourite moment from Line Of Duty, writing ‘bless the wee holy mother of a donkey, Adrian Dunbar’s singing voice is ????????.’
Not everyone was as enamoured with Adrian’s singing however, with one commenting that the character belting out a tune as the episode came to an end ‘looked like it could easily be a music video for Adrian.’
‘It’s a crime drama; but they ran out of story so now we have #AdrianDunbar singing an epilogue,’ one wrote sarcastically, while another viewer added: ‘Oh God, he’s singing again.’
Sure, it seems like it wasn’t for everyone, but RIdley has only just got going, with three more two-hour episodes to come in the next few weeks.
The drama also sees Derry Girls star Bronagh Waugh appear as DI Carol Farman, who convinces retired Ridley to return to the small town as a police consultant.
Ridley himself is tortured by the murder of his wife and daughter, who were killed in a fire by arsonist Michael.
This jailed arsonist Ridley repeatedly visits in prison, despite – or because of – the pain it causes him.
It’s pretty bleak alright – so it’s a good thing he has the singing.
Ridley continues on ITV next Sunday.
