‘Fabulous’ seaside town is the summer’s best staycation spot

Is there anything better than a summer holiday by the British seaside? A gorgeous seaside town has been named this year’s most popular destination.

New research from One Traveller has named Torquay the top destination for older British travellers.

Often known as the ‘English Riviera’, Torquay’s mild climate has attracted British tourists for generations.

The town was once known as a spa town and wealthy Britons travelled there to improve their health.

But it’s no less popular today and Britons looking for a seaside break will find plenty to entertain them in the sunny little town.

Babbacombe beach is Torquay’s top rated beach with one visitor describing it as the area’s “hidden gem”.

Another tourist wrote on Tripadvisor: “A fabulous coastal area of Torquay. Excellent day out or place to stay.”

One person said it had “incredible attractions” with “ravishing tranquil sea shores and strolls” for tourists.

Babbacombe is also famed for its incredible model village while visitors to Torquay can also explore Kents Cavern.

At Bygones Museum, tourists will find three floors of British nostalgia with memorabilia from multiple eras.

Meanwhile, tourists can marvel at North West Europe’s oldest human fossil, which was discovered at Kents Cavern.

The jawbone is over 41,000 years old and offers a glimpse into the area’s history where bears roamed during the Ice Age.

Ian Darkin, director at One Traveller, said: “We are thrilled to see Devon and Torquay being named the most popular staycation for mature travellers in the UK.

“We have seen interest spike in staycations in Devon since the pandemic, and we can safely say that they are here to stay.”
