Fables’ Most Powerful Character Just Became a DC Multiverse-level Threat

One of Fables Universe’s greatest powerhouses just made the leap into the DC Universe, highlighting how much of a threat they could really become.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Batman vs. Bigby! A Wolf in Gotham #6, now on sale from DC Comics

The various versions of the DC Universe that have been introduced over the years have included some pretty impressive and frightening figures. But there are other fictional universes tangentially tied to the DC multiverse that have their own brand of horrifying magical scope that could become a serious threat if they start making more overt moves against the DC heroes.

Batman vs. Bigby! A Wolf in Gotham #6 by Bill Willingham, Brian Level, Jay Leisten, Anthony Fowler Jr, and Lee Loughridge proves that Frau Totenkinder isn’t just still around as a ghost, but capable of hopping into other realities. This suggests the characters from the Fables universe could become major threats to the greater DC multiverse.

Batman vs. Bigby! A Wolf in Gotham has quietly been a sequel to the original Fables series on top of throwing major figures from that series into Gotham City. Alongside a resurrected Cinderella, Bigby and Batman have been able to defeat both Grendel’s Mother as well as a twisted version of the Gotham villain Bookworm. However, within the Bat-Cave, Bigby revealed the true villain of the story: Frau Totenkinder. In Fables, Totenkinder was a powerful witch who’d been a central figure in numerous legends before coming to the “Mundy World” alongside the rest of the Fables. Although she never necessarily repented for her dark magics and ruthless tactics, Totenkinder became a crucial ally to the New York Fables in their long battles against the likes of the Adversary and Mr. Dark.

Eventually taking sides in the conflict between Snow White and Rose Red that made up the final stretch of the series, Totenkinder faced off with Cinderella and her magical arsenal — with both women seemingly falling in battle. But it seems that Totenkinder’s spirit was able to live on in some form, although she admitted that she hasn’t been able to truly find her way back to the land of the living. The book at the center of the miniseries has been the crux of her entire secret plan, with Totenkinder doing her best to find a spell that could formally resurrect her. Ultimately though, Bigby is able to recruit his daughter Winter (who, as the North Wind, is one of Fable’s most powerful forces) to drag them and Totenkinder back to their world and out of this variant of the DC Universe.

Notably, this seems to confirm that the Fables universe is one tied to the greater DC multiverse. As a Vertigo series, Fables remained largely separate from the rest of the worlds and realities introduced across the decades at DC Comics. The extremely meta-nature of the series’ approach to stories and characters made it a difficult one to easily gel to other more grounded universes. Previously, Fables had only really crossed over with other largely fourth-wall leaning stories like The Unwritten. But Batman vs Bigby seems to all but confirm that Fables does exist in the DC multiverse — and that powerful enough figures like Totenkinder or Winter could escape their world and become a threat in other realities. This suggests other beings could do the same, especially monstrous magical threats like Mr. Dark.

Considering the increasing number of such threats breaking into other realities (such as the upcoming Dark Crisis storyline highlighting the mission of the Great Darkness to wipe out all vestiges of life in existence), Totenkinder and other elements from her reality being capable of such acts should serve as a reminder how dangerous figures from that magically enhanced world could really be if thrown against other figures. With Fables about to be revived, it also asks the question of if the characters from their world will begin to appear with more frequency in the greater DC landscape.
