Fable Lead Writer “Cannot Wait” to Show Off What the Team at Playground has Created

When are we finally going to get an update on the new Fable? The RPG revival from Forza Horizon developer Playground Games was announced back in 2020, and aside from a brief teaser trailer, Microsoft has essentially shared nothing specific about the game. Well, it seems there’s a chance something may be revealed soon.

The lead writer for the new Fable, Anna Megill, recently tweeted in celebration of her two-year anniversary at Playground, saying she “cannot wait to show you all the wonderful stuff we’ve created.”

This follows comments from Xbox Game Studios boss Matt Booty, who says he can’t wait to share more information on Fable as some of the progress he’s seen is “just so encouraging.”

“There’s [Fable] stuff I wish I could share and show, because some of the things I’ve seen are just so encouraging. […] [Playground has] a great technology base, they’ve got a passion for the IP, and they’ve just got such a demonstrated commitment to craft and quality. […] During some of the first reviews, I shared a little skepticism that, look, I feel like we’re kind of going out on a limb here, but they’ve since put that to rest. I’m excited for everybody to see it.”

These statements cast doubt on persistent rumors that the development of Fable has been troubled. In the past, we’ve heard that the scope of the game has been scaled back and Playground’s reliance on their in-house engine has slowed down production. Of course, those things could still be true – perhaps Fable has struggled, but maybe it’s overcome those struggles and in a good place now. It’s hard to know where the truth lies. But hey, if Microsoft wants to clear up the confusion, they can go ahead and give us a peek at the game any time.

Microsoft recently streamed their first Xbox Developer Direct, which included new trailers and info for Redfall, Forza Motorsport, and more. They have also confirmed a dedicated Starfield event is forthcoming. While they won’t be involved in E3 itself, Microsoft has said they will have their own showcase around the same time – perhaps that will play host to Fable’s big unveiling.

Fable is coming to PC and Xbox Series X/S. A release window has yet to be revealed.
