FA explain why Tuchel was banned and Conte not after Stamford Bridge scuffle

An FA commission report has detailed why Thomas Tuchel received a ban for his scuffle with Antonio Conte at Stamford Bridge, but the Italian avoided a suspension.

The Chelsea and Tottenham managers clashed during the 2-2 draw earlier this month, but then were involved in a more significant scuffle after the final whistle when they shook hands.

Tuchel refused to let go of the shake, spinning Conte around as he was annoyed that the Spurs boss had not looked him in his eyes.

It was for this reason that the FA decided Tuchel ‘instigated the confrontation’ and why he was fined £35,000 and given a one-match touchline ban, while Conte was fined £15,000 and avoided a ban.

The FA commission’s report read: ‘It was quite clearly TT who instigated the confrontation between himself and AC by choosing to grip AC’s hand and jolt him back after AC had passed him by.

‘Had TT not gripped AC’s hand the confrontation between the two and the subsequent melee that followed would not have occurred;

‘TT gripping AC’s hand for the reason he gave (AC did not look him in the eye) was simply not justifiable; cursory handshakes are a common occurrence at the end of highly charged football matches and there exists no obligation for one person to look the other in the eye whilst shaking hands;

‘TT telling AC to look him in the eyes whilst gripping his hand and not allowing AC to move away was a highly provocative act;

‘AC was unwillingly pulled, literally, into the confrontation with TT; AC did react aggressively to TT’s actions but the Commission did not consider him to have hugely overreacted given the circumstances.’

Tuchel’s ban was briefly suspended, which is why he was on the touchline for the 3-0 defeat to Leeds at the weekend, but will miss Chelsea’s clash with Leicester on Saturday.
