F1 LIVE: Updates as Lewis Hamilton risks disqualification and Max Verstappen penalised
Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen currently find themselves in hot water ahead of Sunday’s Brazilian Grand Prix. The Mercedes man could be excluded from Friday’s qualifying results before this evening’s sprint race after a potential breach of technical regulations.
Verstappen questioned the legality of Hamilton’s drag reduction system (DRS) after yesterday’s qualifying session, during which the defending world champion sealed first place.
A video surfaced of the Dutchman examining his rival’s rear wing in parc ferme, with the Red Bull driver having been summoned to the stewards after an alleged breach of the FIA’s International Sporting Code.
Article 2.5.1 of the code states: “Inside the parc ferme, only the officials assigned may enter. No operation, checking, tuning or repair is allowed unless authorised by the same officials or by the applicable regulations.”
He has since been hit with a fine of £42,681 for ‘touching and examining’ Hamilton’s rear wing after the end of qualifying.
Meanwhile, Hamilton is facing the possibility of a pit-lane start in Sunday’s race if his car is deemed to have been illegally set up during Friday’s qualifying session.
The DRS on his rear wing was flagged for not meeting set requirements during a post-qualifying inspection.
