F1 bosses ‘plotting MotoGP joint race weekend’ at same track

F1 bosses are ‘plotting a MotoGP joint race weekend’ which would see cars and bikes competing on the same track and a venue has already been mooted. Traditionally both series have avoided sending their fans to the same location for a race weekend, but after a meeting between bosses that could be about to change.

F1 boss Stefano Domenicali discussed the idea of a mega joint race weekend when he met with Carmelo Ezpeleta who is the chief executive of Dorna – MotoGP organisers – last month. The pair met at the MotoGP season-opening round at Autodromo do Algarve in Portugal and they are now ‘studying the possibility’ of a joint event happening.

“It’s something that Stefano and I crossed our minds, although at the moment it cannot be done,” Ezpeleta told Soy Motor. “But we are studying the possibility.” The project has already progressed to the stage where they are looking for a track which can host such a mega event.

Ezpeleta has highlighted Madrid as a potential location and has already started speaking to the relevant authorities. The Spaniard added: “We are thinking about this. Stefano told me about a circuit in Madrid and I spoke with the mayor of Madrid.”

One problem facing the project is the packed existing calendar for both series and the agreements they already have with hosting tracks. Last year F1 bosses announced that their 2023 calendar had a record-breaking 24 races with three rounds held in America.

China was initially set to return before later being cancelled because of ‘ongoing difficulties’ battling Covid amid its ‘zero Covid’ policies, which includes regular lockdowns and isolation periods imposed on infected people and those they have had contact with. Instead of replacing the China round, F1 bosses chose to reduce their calendar to 23 races.
