Eye-watering amount ‘cashed up bogan’ Smith has won

Earlier this year Cameron Smith’s golf coach, Grant Field, described the Aussie larrikin as a “very cashed-up bogan from Queensland”.

That comment came before Smith won the 150th edition of the Open Championship at St Andrews’ The Old Course.

His instantly famous one-shot victory to secure the Claret Jug netted him another $3.66 million, adding to what was already – by a long way – his most successful season to date.

According to the PGA Tour, Smith has pocketed a total $14,404,098 from 13 events in 2022. His previous best season was last year, when he won $8,560,052 from 22 events, only winning once.

He’s won three this year – including the Open and the Players Championship, worth a combined $8.9 million – but also missed the cut three times.

His total career winnings, since joining the professional tour in 2013, is officially $39,167,869. That’s not taking into account sponsorship deals and endorsements.

Adam Scott, Jason Day, and Marc Leishman are the only Australian golfers to surpass $50 million in career winnings to date. The way he’s going, Smith should be joining his compatriots on that list within two years.

Three of them now have one major victory to their name – Smith’s Open joining Scott’s 2013 Masters and Day’s 2015 PGA Championship silverware Down Under.
