EXCLUSIVE: Thor Enlists His Most Dangerous Frenemy in the Search For Mjolnir

Marvel Comics presents an exclusive preview of Thor #18, by Donny Cates, Pasqual Ferry and Bob Quinn.

Recently in the pages of Thor, the titular God of Thunder found lifting Mjolnir increasingly difficult. This eventually led to him giving the powerful weapon to the Avengers for safekeeping. However, in Thor #17, the hammer went missing from Avengers Mountain. Now, Marvel Comics has given CBR an exclusive preview of Thor #18, by Donny Cates, Pasqual Ferry, Bob Quinn, Matt Wilson and VC’s Joe Sabino, which shows the God of Thunder enlisting the help of Loki to retrieve his lost weapon.

At the start of Thor #18, expresses his anxieties about his reign to Loki and then asks for the God of Mischief’s help finding Mjolnir. However, Loki refuses his brother’s request, at least initially. The anti-hero is still somewhat put off by his previous adventures with Thor, which nearly resulted in grievous harm. Thor doesn’t relent. Instead, he says, “You are the only person I can trust.” It’s not totally clear by the end of the preview if Loki does indeed agree to aid Thor, but the framing of the story makes it very likely.

Created by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber and Jack Kirby, the modern version of Loki first appeared in 1962’s Journey into Mystery #85. Based on the Norse god of the same name, Loki is the adoptive brother of Thor and was depicted as a villain for much of his early history. More recently, Loki has become more of an anti-hero and on several occasions worked to help his brother. The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s version of Loki, played by Tom Hiddleston, debuted in 2011’s Thor.

You can read CBR’s exclusive preview of Thor #18 below alongside the solicitation information for the book, which teases Throg embarking on a secret mission on behalf of Thor and is presumably related to Mjolnir. Releasing Oct. 20, Thor #18 features covers from Olivier Coipel and Matt Wilson; Joe Jusko; and Nic Klein.
