EXCLUSIVE: Martial Arts Meets the Supernatural in Blackbox’s Ninja Kaidan

Blackbox Comics is celebrating its fifth anniversary with Ninja Kaidan, a new ongoing series featuring martial arts and some supernatural twists.

CBR has an exclusive preview of Ninja Kaidan, which comes from writer Eric Palicki, artist Lucas Meyer, colorist Michael Bartolo, letterer Dezi Sienty and Blackbox editor, publisher and creator Dimitrios Zaharakis. The new series follows Yuki Snow, an unlikely ninja who mysteriously finds himself fighting against the supernatural. The synopsis reads, “Not even a lifetime of martial arts training and years of military service can prepare Yuki for his latest, and perhaps greatest, challenge when he inherits Yokai Consolidated, his estranged father’s company. Yuki quickly becomes fascinated by his father’s pet project, the miraculous Kaidan armor, which allows its wearer to see, hear and even touch ghosts! As he struggles to unravel the mystery of the armor and its purpose, Yuki finds himself facing foes, living and dead, who will stop at nothing to take it for themselves.” Along with being about ninjas, ghosts and martial arts, Palicki said Ninja Kaidan is a touching story about “a son stepping out from under his father’s shadow.”

Palicki — who previously penned or co-penned Black’s Myth, Atlantis Wasn’t Built for Tourists and Marvel’s Guardians of Infinity #6 — said that Ninja Kaidan is one of the most “bonkers” things that he’s ever written to date. “[Ninja Kaidan] leans into the traditions of comics and action movies of the 1990s, formative material in my evolution as a storyteller,” he explained. Palicki also said that Ninja Kaidan‘s artwork should offer fans something unlike they’ve seen before. “Lucas [Meyer] was born to draw frenetic action, and he brings this story to life beautifully,” he said. “I think people are going to be blown away by his work.”

Blackbox Comic first launched in 2017 with I.T. The Secret World of Modern Banking. Since then, the independent and New York-based publisher has also put out a number of other exciting series, including Djinn Hunter, Bigs and Tiny, Devil’s Dominion, Project Icarus and more. The release of Ninja Kaidan marks a new chapter for Blackbox as they join Diamond Comics’ Final Order Cutoff (FOC) program. Ninja Kaidan #1 will go on FOC ahead of its July release.

Ninja Kaidan #1 features cover art by Meyer, Ron Frenz (Thunderstrike, Spider-Girl) and Tiago da Silva. Pre-orders are now available at comic book shops or at Blackbox Comics. Digital copies can be purchased through comiXology.
