Exclusive: Kate Hudson and Kathryn Hahn on reuniting in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery
Crafting a whodunnit is no easy feat and to do it twice is nothing short of a triumph. That’s precisely why Glass Onion’s mere existence feels like a victory lap. Directed by Rian Johnson, the film brings back Daniel Craig’s delightful detective Benoit Blanc in a Knives Out sequel that’s sharper, snazzier and sexier. Set on a flamboyant island estate, the film is a new puzzle with plenty of quirky suspects. The stacked ensemble cast includes Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Dave Bautista, Jessica Henwick and others. While Kate plays Birdie Jay, a supermodel-turned-fashionista, Kathryn plays Claire Debella, a politician.
In an exclusive interview with Filmfare, ahead of the film’s release, Kate Hudson and Kathryn Hahn opened up about what went down behind the scenes.
Glass Onion is also a How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days reunion. What was the experience of working together again like?
Kate: The best! It was so fun and exciting. It was so great seeing Kathryn. We hadn’t seen each other for a very long time actually so when I first got there, I was like point me in the direction of Kathryn Hahn, please. And we shared the best hugs and that was it. Then our men got along while we were filming together. We would be working on set and we’d hear that Ethan and Danny were on a trip with the kids to see the ruins or something. And I felt like it was a new chapter of our friendship. I love this.
Kate: Jenny did a lot of the work because of all these outfits. If you saw them in real life you’d think how can you not look at an insane person who has clearly travelled across the world in an outfit that nobody would ever travel in? But, I’m gonna ditto Kathryn and say that it was the same for me. This film is so well-written that one person isn’t the same without the other. I was just talking about Peg (Jessica Henwick) and Birdie’s relationship – she plays my assistant. Our relationship was so symbiotic. I was like a moth to her flame a little bit. I needed her to help me play off of something.
Kathryn: I found it very remarkable how Daniel was just there as an ensemble member. He came in with such a spirit of generosity and as if it were the first time. He did not have any airs and didn’t feel like a “star on a movie set” at all. He was there to kind of be a part of a brand-new episode. And he just happened to have an accent that he had been working on hahaha. So he brought a freshness. He wasn’t saying “Well, when I first did this…” There was none of that energy.
Filming for this project must have been quite the experience, what’s your most memorable takeaway from the sets of Glass Onion?
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is set to stream on OTT on December 23, 2022.
