EXCLUSIVE: Gunslinger Spawn Sales Mark the Biggest Superhero Launch in 25 Years

Image Comics’ Gunslinger Spawn #1 from McFarlane, Booth and more sells a whopping 385,000 units ahead of its release date in October.

October’s Gunslinger Spawn #1 from Todd McFarlane, Aleš Kot, Kevin Keane, Brett Booth and Philip Tan is already a massive hit for Image Comics and Todd McFarlane Productions.

CBR can exclusively reveal that Gunslinger Spawn #1’s first printing has sold 385,000 copies, making it the biggest launch for a new ongoing superhero title in 25 years. This eclipses 2015’s Spider-Gwen #1 from Marvel, which sold an impressive 300,000 copies.

This news follows Spawn’s Universe #1 becoming Image’s top-selling comic in two decades in June when it sold over 200,000 units. King Spawn #1 subsequently went on to sell 520,000 units for first and second printing combined.

Debuting in Spawn #119, Gunslinger Spawn is Jeremy Winston, who’s pulled into the 21st century from 200 years in the past to confront new threats as he searches for a way home. “Gunslinger Spawn returns with a vengeance, and he will make Spawn look like a Boy Scout,” McFarlane said when the title was announced. “Finally, fans will get a glimpse into his history as we dig deeper into his past and explore his future.”

“It was a story that expanded on some of the ideas that had already been there, which is that there have been Spawns throughout time in our history and will continue to be in our future while pulling back and showing some of the visuals and stories of the some of the characters that there was more than one of these,” McFarlane told CBR while discussing Gunslinger Spawn’s origin. “When I started Spawn, there was one Spider-Man and one Batman. I thought I had lots of Spawns but I’ve got nothing compared to those two dudes.”

“To me, he’s like a twenty-something Clint Eastwood but we’ve seen those types of characters before in a handful of movies with different actors — that rugged, super-serious cowboy Western character that goes about their business and rarely, if ever, smiles,” he continued. “Their business is doing what they do which is, at times, exacting justice and/or revenge. They don’t necessarily take any pleasure in it, it’s just what they do. In this case, being a Spawn, you get a lot of opportunities because people have a tendency to come knocking on your door for the wrong reasons and he just has to react to it.”

Gunslinger Spawn #1 goes on sale Oct. 20 from Image Comics.
