EXCLUSIVE: Darkseid Controls Superman’s Ultimate Foe on Dark Crisis #1 Cover

CBR can exclusively reveal Dan Schoening’s cover for the first issue of DC’s upcoming Dark Crisis event, which features two of Superman’s fiercest foes.

CBR can exclusively reveal Dan Schoening’s cover for Dark Crisis #1, by writer Joshua Williamson, artist Daniel Sampere, colorist Alejandro Sánchez and letterer Tom Napolitano.

The cover, which you can see below, shows Darkseid with Doomsday on a chain. It’s not clear at this time how the cover may or may not reflect the events of Dark Crisis #1. However, it does bring together two of Clark Kent/Superman’s deadliest enemy, while implying the ruler of Apokolips has control over Doomsday.

Dark Crisis #1 variant from Dan Schoening showing Darkseid and Doomsday.

Announced last month, Dark Crisis sees Pariah harnessing the power of the Great Darkness following the death of the Justice League in issue #75 of that team’s book. This forces those left behind to stand against this new threat. However, not everyone is willing to join the fight. Prior to the release of Dark Crisis #1, DC will put out two prologues to the event: Dark Crisis #0 FCBD Special Edition and Justice League: Road to Dark Crisis #1. Those release on May 7 and May 31, respectively.

Created by Dan Jurgens, Brett Breeding, Jerry Ordway, Louise Simonson and Roger Stern, Doomsday was first teased in 1992’s Superman: The Man of Steel #17 before he made his first full appearance in the next month’s issue. Doomsday is one of Superman’s deadliest villains and actually succeeded at killing the hero during the “Death of Superman” event in the ’90s. Doomsday’s inclusion here is likely connected to Justice League #75 arriving on the 30th anniversary of Superman #75, which concluded the “Death of Superman” story by killing the Man of Steel.

One of the most powerful beings in the DC Universe, Darkseid was created by Jack Kirby and first appeared in 1970’s Superman’s Pal, Jimmy Olsen #134. Darkseid is a member of the New Gods and seeks to conquer the entirety of the multiverse. To accomplish his goals, Darkseid is generally shown as looking for the Anti-Life Equation, which strips free will from its victims. In the decades since his creation, Darkseid had remained a major enemy of the Justice League, with them fighting against each other on many occasions.

Dark Crisis #1 releases in June, with the event slated to run for seven issues. Daniel Sampere’s cover for the first issue costs $5.99, while the above card stock variant retails for $6.99.
