EXCLUSIVE: Avengers’ Thor Fights His Evil Multiversal Twin – To the Death

Avengers #54, by Jason Aaron and Juan Frigeri, pits Thor against his evil multiversal counterpart, who is working with the Dark Phoenix.

Marvel Comics provided CBR with an exclusive preview of Avengers #54, by writer Jason Aaron, artist Juan Frigeri, colorist David Curiel and letterer Cory Petit. In the book, Earth-616’s Thor faces off against his evil multiversal counterpart.

The current arc of Avengers, “Death Hunters,” opened with Doctor Doom assembling a multiversal version of the Masters of Evil and launching an assault against Earth-616. Their most recent target was Avengers Mountain, and they successfully destroyed that locale, leaving the fates of those inside unclear. As that was going on, Steve Rogers/Captain America, Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel and Brandy Selby/Starbrand were dealing with a problem in Kansas City, while Thor Odinson, Tony Stark/Iron Man and Maya Lopez/Echo were occupied on Asgard.

In the preview pages for Avengers #54, Captain America, Captain Marvel, Starbrand and a Deathlok fly back to Avengers Mountain. However, they’re unable to get in contact with their allies. The conversation then turns to the way Starbrand aged up after using her powers. As the Deathlok vows to do whatever he can to repay her, the evil version of Thor introduced earlier in “Death Hunters” throws Mjolnir through the jet, killing him. Earth-616’s Thor then arrives on the scene and begins a battle to the death with his doppelganger, who is working with Dark Phoenix. However, as the preview ends, a flaming bike chain — almost certainly belonging to Robbie Reyes/Ghost Rider — grabs the evil Thor’s Mjolnir.

Based on the Norse god of the same name, Thor was created by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber and Jack Kirby. The character first appeared in 1962’s Journey into Mystery #83. Generally, Thor wields Mjolnir, a mystical hammer that enhances his already formidable Asgardian abilities. Thor is one of the founding members of the Avengers and a key part of the current team.

The Avengers first assembled in a self-titled book released in 1963. Over the years, the team, which was created by Lee and Kirby, has had a number of different iterations. The current version is led by T’Challa/Black Panther and features, in addition to those mentioned above, such members as Namor and Jane Foster/Valkyrie.
