Exam season: should we ditch the exam halls? by maahi upadhyay Parmiters School
If there is a universal hatred for something it is exams – every student and ex student can reminisce to the nauseous feeling at the pit of your stomach, the overwhelming tiredness they feel when stepping out of the exam and the overthinking after somebody said an answer that u didnt get.
But are exams really the best way to measure your ability and intelligence as a student? All those 2 years of studying and working hard all come down to 2 days to sit 2 exams to measure how much you really know about the subject. Many argue that broken down tests throughout the year are a better measure as a student could perform better on one day than the other. This way there is an accurate understanding of the students actual breadth of knowledge as they perform consistently at a level. By averaging their scores out as a final grade it provides the student with less anxiety about how they will do on the day as they always have chances to improve and maintain high grades.
Coursework is also another way to accurately measure a students performance – something commonly done in art and design subjects where students get to showcase their hard work to the best of their ability and show their potential. If it’s possible for creative subjects why not others?
So as may draws around and students begin their race to finish all academic exams do you think there should be a change? Should exam halls be boarded up and coursework and frequent class testing? Should there be a change to the system older than us?
