Ex-Titans star Taylor Lewan filing lawsuit over alleged botched ACL surgery
Former Titans offensive lineman Taylor Lewan says he filed a lawsuit against those involved with his October 2020 surgery to repair a torn right ACL he sustained in Tennessee’s Week 2 win over the Texans that year.
Lewan shared the news on his “Bussin’ With The Boys” podcast on Tuesday, and said he is unable to discuss the matter further at the time due to legal reasons.
“I am in an unfortunate circumstance where I have had to file a lawsuit against the people and entities that are involved with my surgery from October of 2020,” the 31-year-old Lewan said.
“We all know how lawyers work. We all know how all that stuff goes. If this thing goes to court or whatever they can [use] anything against me.
“But I wanted to take this opportunity on this podcast to let all of you know what is kind of going on in my life. Fans that have followed my career, seeing those years before the ACL surgery and obviously after the ACL surgery, kind of wondering what the hell is happening with Lewan.”
“… Since 2020, it’s sucked. It’s been tough. I would love to sit here and vent… but the reality is, I just can’t right now. When I can I will definitely share more when I’m able to.”
Lewan underwent surgery to repair a torn ACL in his right knee a few days after sustaining the injury on Oct. 18, 2020, during a game against Houston.
He missed the remainder of that season.
When he returned to action in 2021, Lewan started 14 games, including Tennessee’s playoff loss to the Cincinnati Bengals — but missed time due to knee issues.
Lewan suffered another torn ACL in his right knee in September 2022, after two starts last season.
In October 2022, the three-time Pro Bowler said on his podcast that when he returned from his first ACL tear, his knee was in pain and swelling up.
“When I tore my ACL in October 2020, I was on this f–king mission to get back as fast as possible and do everything I possibly could do right,” Lewan said.
“Last year during the season I had issues. My knee was swelling I was always feeling pain in there and I was like, ‘I don’t know what the deal is.’
“It turns out this year, I found out there are things with my knee going on now that are a direct correlation to what happened when I got my knee done [in 2020].
“So I have to go and get my knee fixed to be able to play football or to live a normal life just in general. There is not a whole lot I can go into for reasons I can’t talk about right now.
“… But the best I can say about this, this is not a new injury. It’s the same injury that happened to last for two years.”
The day after he recorded the podcast episode, Lewan flew to Los Angeles to have a second ACL surgery on his right knee.
The Titans released Lewan in February, without taking on the ninth-year veteran’s $14.8 million salary cap charge in 2023.
He was released with a “failed physical” designation, the team said.
Lewan went viral after his release when he shared a photo of his belongings in garbage bags on his porch, which he said were dropped off by the Titans.
Lewan has not played a full season since 2017, appearing in only 47 games over the past five years.
Prior to the injury, Lewan — the No. 11 overall pick by Tennessee in the 2014 NFL Draft out of Michigan — was considered one of the best offensive tackles in the NFL.
He also served as captain for a stint in 2015.
If Lewan’s playing days are over, The Post’s Andrew Marchand postulated that Lewan’s “infectious personality” will almost certainly garner him broadcasting options.
Last Thursday, the Titans selected Northwestern offensive lineman Peter Skoronski with the 11th overall pick in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft.
Tennessee also signed free agents Andre Dillard and Daniel Brunskill.
