Everything you need to know about Winter Fuel Payment

The Winter Fuel Payment is being made available to millions of pensioners this year, providing between £250 and £600. The one-off payment is designed to help older people with their heating costs as temperatures plummet this winter.

A new DWP video has explained: “If your household is eligible for a Winter Fuel Payment for 2022/23, you will automatically get an additional £300 to help with the cost of living.”

This extra sum is known as the Pensioner Cost of Living Payment and is only applicable this winter.

The sum is paid in addition to any cost of living payments people get with their benefits or tax credits, if this is applicable.

The new Government video has unpacked the answers to key questions surrounding the support.

“If you were in prison for the whole week from September 19 to 25, 2022.

“Finally, if you lived in a care home for the weeks from June 26 to September 25 2022, and you got Pension Credit, Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) or income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA).”

The DWP video points Britons towards the official Government website to help them find out more about eligibility.

When will people get the Winter Fuel Payment?

The DWP video explains the Department will write to people to inform them about how much they will get.

The Winter Fuel Payment is then paid into the same account a person receives their benefit or pension.

The video adds: “Most payments are made in November or December.”

Individuals should get the Winter Fuel Payment automatically.

What should people do if they do not receive the Winter Fuel Payment?

“If you do not get a letter, or the money does not arrive in your account by January 2023, please call the Winter Fuel Payment Centre.

“Do not call us before January 13, 2023 to chase your payment as we cannot answer enquiries until after that date.

“Please check your November and December bank statements carefully before you call us.”

What about those who have never had a Winter Fuel Payment before?

These individuals will need to submit a claim, the DWP video suggests, but only in certain circumstances.

If a person does not receive the state pension or any benefits, they will need to act.

However, the video adds: “Also claim if the only benefit you receive is Adult Disability Premium from the Scottish Government, Housing Benefit, Council Tax Reduction, Child Benefit or Universal Credit.”

People must claim before March 31, 2023 to receive their payment.
