Everyone Gets Naked in Gary Frank’s Stunning Frazetta Homage

Gary Frank shares his own version of a Frank Frazetta action scene after his cover for Geiger #4 sparked comparisons to the late fantasy artist.

In a homage to the paintings of legendary illustrator Frank Frazetta, comic artist Gary Frank went “full Frank” in an extremely naked sketch.

Frank posted the sketch on Twitter, using stars to cover up nipples and genitalia. The artist, who currently draws the post-apocalyptic creator-owned series Geiger alongside writer Geoff Johns for Image Comics, clarified that the sketch was simply done for fun and was not a cover.

In response to Twitter commentators asking to see the fully uncensored version, Frank joked that he didn’t “want to risk a Twitter ban for a few nipples and a nut sack.” He added that he had been inspired to pencil the sketch after the lineart for his cover for Geiger #4 had drawn comparisons to Frazetta’s work, including a comment from comic writer Ron Marz, who called it “Frazetta-level action.”

The cover composition for Geiger #4 features the Organ People, a gang of irradiated thugs reminiscent of Mad Max characters, attacking a truck. One of them wields a baseball over his head in a pose reminiscent of the titular barbarian in Frazetta’s The Death Dealer II painting.

Frazetta, who died in 2010, was one of the foremost fantasy and science fiction artists in 20th century America. Well known for his Conan the Barbarian illustrations which helped define the look of the sword and sorcery genre, Frazetta’s work typically featured burly men and curvaceous women engaged in combat or facing off against deadly foes — usually wearing little in the way of clothing.
