Everton target Vitor Pereira responds to angry protests with comment that will worry fans

Everton managerial target Vitor Pereira has provided a personal update on his hopes of getting the job in an unorthodox TV interview in the midst of the recruitment process. The Portuguese is viewed as one of two key frontrunners to the job, with Toffees fans seeming to favour the appointment of Frank Lampard instead. And he took to Sky Sports on Wednesday to offer an update on the process.

Everton parted company with former Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez just over a week ago after a torrid run of form.

The Spaniard started life positively in the Goodison Park dugout, but fans were quick to voice their discontent when results began to take a turn for the worst.

Struggling in the bottom half of the table, the Toffees are looking to bring in a boss who can save their season, with Pereira and Lampard among those in the frame.

Some fans made their feelings known on Wednesday, with graffiti outside Goodison Park outlining their preference for Lampard over the Portuguese.

Naturally, that left Pereira in an awkward situation, but the former Fenerbahce boss publicly addressed the protest on Sky Sports News, along with comments which may worry those who are pleading for the Toffees to look elsewhere.

“I think they [Everton] were enthusiastic [in] what I proposed to the game,” he said of talks with the club’s hierarchy.

“An intense game, a pressing game, a game with possession, and we need to give confidence again to these players, this team, the fans. And this is what I proposed to them.

“What I felt in the meetings, they were very positive with the interviews.

“They have other candidates. This is a time for decisions. I’m sure that now or in the future I will be in the Premier League.

“Just to wait for the decision, to be calm, they are grateful for the interviews.”

Pereira’s suggestion that the Everton board responded positively to his tactical outlook for the team may come as a concern to those hoping that he is not appointed as the club’s next boss.

The reaction to his potential appointment has been broadly negative, despite having won league titles with Porto and Shanghai SIPG in Portugal and China respectively.

That recently culminated in graffiti outside Goodison Park calling for Lampard to be appointed instead, something Pereira also took the time to address.

“They don’t know me very well, they don’t know my work, they don’t know me as a person, they don’t know my CV,” he added.

“I work in a lot of countries, several clubs, several titles. Before you work with a person, you cannot judge.

“But I understand the feeling of the supporters because in the last year, they have not had good results and it is normal to not be happy.

“But I came here with the intention to bring good football for the fans, this is my target.”
