Eurovision 2023: Who is Mae Muller as she is named the UK’s entry?
On Thursday morning the London raised singer was named as the act that would be taking to the stage in Liverpool in two months’ time.
The 25-year-old singer will perform at the long-running song contest with the track I Wrote A Song.
While Ryder just missed out on taking out the contest last time around, coming second place saw the UK handed hosting duties after it was deemed too dangerous to hold in winner Kalush Orchestra’s home country due to the ongoing Russian invasion.
Tickets for the grand final, which will take place at the 11,000-capacity Liverpool Arena, have been in high demand, selling out in just over half an hour earlier this week.
Eurovision 2023 will air on BBC and will be hosted by singer and Britain’s Got Talent judge Alesha Dixon, Ted Lasso actress Hannah Waddingham and Ukrainian singer Julia Sanina, as well as returning favourite, comedian and talk show host Graham Norton.
But if you haven’t heard much about Mae, here’s some more details about the act chosen to represent the UK?
Who is Mae Muller and where is she from?
Born and raised in Kentish Town, Mae started writing music when she was just eight-years-old.
She attended Fine Arts College in Belsize Park, and later worked in a pub so she could pursue her dreams of a music career during the day.
Uploading some demos to SoundCloud in 2017, Mae was discovered and signed by her manager.
As a child she also appeared in the music video for Mika’s Grace Kelly.
What is her Eurovision song and where can I listen to it?
The UK’s first female act in five years, Mae co-wrote I Wrote A Song with Brit-Nominated songwriter Lewis Thompson (David Guetta, Joel Corry, and Raye – Bed) and Karen Poole, who has written for Kylie Minogue, Lily Allen, David Guetta and Alisha’s Attic.
It has already been shared on the official Eurovision YouTube channel, but will have its first televised broadcast tonight on Eurovision 2023: Meet the UK Act on BBC One and iPlayer at 8:55pm.
Mae was also born in 1997, the year that the UK last took out the competition, with Katrina and the Waves’ Love Shine a Light being named the stand-out song and performance at that time.
What other songs has she written?
The musician’s first EP, After Hours, was released in 2018, followed by Frankly, which was released later that year.
They were followed by her debut studio album, titled Chapter 1, the following year.
She also supported Little Mix on their 2019 tour.
In 2012 Mae teamed up with Swedish artist collective Neiked and the American rapper Polo G on the single Better Days, which scored a top 10 US chart and was performed on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
She’s achieved massive success on streaming with her music, with her 2022 single I Just Came To Dance being streamed on Spotify more than 2.5million times as of March 2023.
The Eurovision Song Contest airs Saturday, May 13 on BBC One.
