European Data Protection Board: European Data Protection Board launches ChatGPT Task Force – Times of India

The EU’s European Data Protection Board, or EDPB, is launching a task force to monitor ChatGPT. EDPB is the body that unites Europe’s national privacy watchdogs. The announcement by EDPB follows a unilateral move by Italy last month to temporarily ban ChatGPT. Germany’s commissioner for data protection too said that the country too follow Italy. Also, it comes on a day when the Spanish Data Protection Agency, known as the AEPD in Spanish, stated that it was launching a preliminary investigation into OpenAI over possible privacy violations by ChatGPT.
“The EDPB members discussed the recent enforcement action undertaken by the Italian data protection authority against OpenAI about the Chat GPT service,” the statement added,” said the body in a brief statement. It further added, “The EDPB decided to launch a dedicated task force to foster cooperation and to exchange information on possible enforcement actions conducted by data protection authorities.”
What AI rules may aim at
According to a report by news agency Reuters, a source at one national watchdog said that member states hoped to align their policy positions but this would take time. The source said that member states were not seeking to punish or make rules that will affect ChatGPT owner OpenAI, but rather to create general policies that “are transparent.”
The EDPB is charged with ensuring the General Data Protection Regulation, Europe’s landmark privacy law, is applied consistently throughout the EU and includes the data protection authorities of each member state.
Earlier this week, the Italian Data Protection Authority released a series of measures that Microsoft-backed OpenAI needs to implement if it wants to restore access to ChatGPT in the Southern European country. The measures include allowing users and non-users to object to having their data processed by ChatGPT and enabling them to correct the incorrect information ChatGPT has about them.
