Eternals Reveals the True Cost of Mister Sinister’s Celestial Attack
Makkari offered some insights into how Mister Sinister might give them a path forward now that the Eternals have been abandoned by their gods.
WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Eternals: Celestia #1, on sale now from Marvel Comics.
The Eternals have had a rough time trying to find their purpose following the Celestials’ abandonment of them. To find out that the beings they worshipped as gods had intended for them to be nothing more than guardians of a potential cure for a deadly disease to Celestials was a hard blow. And in the absence of their “gods,” the most devoted of the Eternals have been trying to find their new path forward. In Eternals: Celestia #1 by Kieron Gillen, Kei Zama, John Livesay, Matthew Wilson and VC’s Clayton Cowles, Makkari remarked how the death of the Dreaming Celestial was an act of defilement against their gods, a deed that still inspires a different path forward. And the memory of the Dreaming Celestials’ death still may cause issues.
Makkari and Ajak were both priests of a kind for the Celestials, tasked with interpreting what they say whenever a Celestial came to Earth. The revelation of the Eternals’ true purpose and the loss of their deities hit them especially hard. To try and move on, the two went on a pilgrimage to the only remaining celestial on Earth, the dead one currently acting as Avengers Mountain. But over the course of their journey, Makkari gave her insights into how they should move forward.
While Ajak wishes to wait for the return of the Celestials, Makkari sees their abandonment as a good thing. The Celestials never intended for the Eternals to be anything more than bodyguards deceived into a different purpose. But Makkari had also seen her god, the Dreaming Celestial, used for parts in the schemes of Mister Sinister — an act that would later result in the Dreaming Celestial’s death. But this inspired Makkari, who reasoned that if parts of Celestials can be used to create something new, then they could make a new Celestial to guide the Eternals.
The Dreaming Celestial, designated Tiamut, was a communicator for the Celestials, examining planets that they examined to determine if their planet’s life force was ideal to be collected by the Fulcrum, the being that the Celestials served. The Dreaming Celestial was betrayed by his kin and trapped beneath Diablo Mountains in California where he would remain for millennia until he was freed from his prison. Rather than raze the Earth, the Dreaming Celestial decided to judge humanity for himself, choosing Makkari as his link to the species.
He would not stay in silent judgment for long. His presence in the world made him vulnerable to attack and manipulation. The event Makkari was referring to was when Mister Sinister activated the Dreaming Celestial and used its head to transform parts of San Francisco into his own image. But the fact that the Celestial could be used in such a way was a beacon to other mutants to also use the Celestial. They opened a portal, allowing the Exterminators — the tools Celestials used to destroy their failures — to come through and kill the Celestial.
Makkari’s comments make it clear that this abuse of the Celestial was blasphemy against their gods, but at the same time pointed out that they weren’t as invulnerable as gods should have been. Even worse, because of the Dreaming Celestial’s death, a prophecy given to Makkari about a new covenant between Eternals and Deviants went unfulfilled. A possible end to millennia of conflict was robbed from them.
So the Eternals might still be understandably angry about this. Makkari seems to have moved on, ready to find a new lease on life, but the fact that one of their gods was defiled in such a way still must sting. Even now, after being abandoned by them, Ajak is still devoted. An attack on one Celestial is an attack on her faith. They might take issue knowing that Mister Sinister is now a part of leading the future of mutantkind.
