The addition of veteran right-hander Colten Brewer to the bullpen could mean the end of the road for Estevan Florial with the Yankees.
The longtime Yankee outfield prospect was designated for assignment on Saturday to open up a roster spot for Brewer prior to their game against the Giants in The Bronx.
Brewer was acquired from the Rays for cash considerations on Thursday after the Yankees had just seven pitchers in the bullpen for their season-opening win over San Francisco.
Florial was on the Opening Day roster and pinch-ran for Giancarlo Stanton.
The 25-year-old lefty-swinging Florial has struggled at the plate throughout his career- especially with strikeouts.
He’s whiffed 21 times in 63 major league plate appearances.
Florial hit well with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre last season, finishing with an .850 OPS, but still struck out 140 times in 461 plate appearances.
The Yankees have seven days to trade Florial or put him on waivers.
Brewer, 30, spent all of last season at Triple-A Omaha in the Kansas City system and has struggled in 81 appearances over parts of four seasons in the majors.
