ESTA 2021: Piyush Goyal asks startups to help India become energy-independent
Goyal said Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was a wake up call for the country to not depend on the world for crude oil or defence equipment. “Can we have more innovators help India become independent?” he asked during an interaction with ET’s executive editor Bodhisatva Ganguli.
Goyal said India has always been dependent on imports for its petrol, diesel and crude oil and natural gas needs.“I think some of our startups will now be looking at innovative ways of solving this problem and leading the cleantech revolution,” he said.
“You can’t move coal and wheat in the same container. Can some of you come with some innovation [to solve this]?” Goyal said, offering an example of the problems startups should look to tackle.
“If you believe in yourself and have the courage of your convictions, the world will recognise it. The world will reward it,” he added.
On India’s evolving ecommerce policy, he said different ideas are being floated and the government has not made up its mind on any one model. He also urged the industry to self-regulate. “Can the industry come forward and say ‘We are willing to self-regulate, so interference from the government is minimal?” he asked.
