Esports in North America Brings No Money, Claims Twitch Streamer Disguised Toast
Canadian streamer Disguised Toast posted a video on his YouTube channel on Friday where he ‘revealed’ what’s going on behind the scenes of North American Esports. He claims that no esport Erganisation is financially safe and sustained right now. Here’s more on what he said.
Disguised Toast spills the beans about esports in North America
Disguised Toast started off by talking about the fate of his Esports company DSG. Earlier in January he founded a Valorant professional squad with an investment of $500,000, followed by a League of Legends team in May. He looks back and states that these were the worst ideas he has ever had.
He also pointed out how Riot Games decisions of letting organisation drop their Tier 2 teams affected his company. This was a decision on Riot Games’ part that led most teams to walk out of the League of Legends Challenger Series Summer Split, and ultimately delayed the championship by two weeks.
However, when he took the decision of founding another League of Legends team, he was told that he’d have to spend another 1 million dollars, while not getting back any of the revenue in return. He ponders upon the question, “How do you make money in Esports in North America?”, and here’s what he says,
“If you look at any Esports org in North America, all of them are either broke or going broke. And I do mean all of them. Some orgs will try and put on a front and say, ‘Hey, we’re still good, we look good, everything’s cool here.’ Trust me when I say, everyone is losing a lot of money. A lot of people are being fired, no org is safe right now.”
Sponsors are leaving esports, claims Disguised Toast
He further added that even sponsors are moving out of Esports team. He mentioned about this “high profile energy drink brand” that he approached for his company, who at the time, is sponsoring “another high profile Esports company”. The brand apparently refused to sponsor Disguised Toast and informed them that they continue to sponsor the other organization because of the terms of their contract which prevents them to dissociate from them before its conclusion.
In the video, Disguised Toast also talks about the lack of initiative to create a sustainable earning model for Esports in North America. As a result of which, he claims that professional players are increasingly moving to Patreon for ‘support from fans’. This is where Disguised Toast takes the opportunity to introduce their Patreon channel as well.
While the entire video might definitely direct viewers to DSG’s Patreon channel, it also brings to light the dire financial conditions of North American Esports, if they stand true that is.
