Erling Haaland demolishes Premier League record set 24 years ago
The Norwegian striker has taken English football by storm since his summer arrival from Borussia Dortmund and netted three more goals in City’s amazing 6-3 win over Manchester United at the Etihad, while he has scored 17 in 11 across all competitions.
The 22-year-old has become the first player in Premier League history to score hat-tricks in three successive home games – after trebles against Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace – and has already scored as many Premier League hat-tricks as the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Didier Drogba.
Another amazing piece of history Haaland grabbed for himself on Sunday was the quickest player to three hat-tricks in the Premier League.
It has taken the Norwegian just eight games to score three Premier League hat-tricks, with Michael Owen the previous quickest to that tally, which took him 48 Premier League appearances.
Owen netted his three all in 1998 when playing for Liverpool, scoring trebles against Sheffield Wednesday, Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest.
Ruud van Nistelrooy took 59 appearances to make it to three hat-tricks, while Fernando Torres managed it in 64 games.
Haaland’s 14 league goals this season is twice as many as anyone else has managed in the Premier League, with Harry Kane his nearest rival for the Golden Boot on seven.
The most goals ever scored in a Premier League season is 34, by Andy Cole and Alan Shearer, although that was when the season was 42 matches. Mohamed Salah holds the record for a 38-games season with 32 goals. Haaland is on course to smash the records, regardless of Shearer and Cole having extra games to play.
Kevin Phillips scored the most goals ever in a debut Premier League season when he notched 30 for Sunderland in the 1999/2000 campaign.
After Haaland’s latest exploits, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola said: ‘It is (incredible). But he has done this before arriving here – in Norway, Austria and Germany. The numbers are scary.’
