Channel 9 and 2 Day FM star Erin Molan has finally cleared the air on a long-running rumour about her next career move.
Erin Molan has joked about reports she’s moving into politics next year, but hasn’t ruled out a potential shift in the future.
It comes after reports the 2 Day FM star was approached by the Liberal Party about taking on the seat of Eden-Monaro — where Molan grew up — at the next federal election.
While Molan, 38, confirmed she had been in conversations with “key people” from the party, she revealed she decided it wasn’t the right time to jump careers as a “newly-single mum”, joking that the gig “just didn’t pay enough”.
She added that a political career some time in the future wasn’t out of the question.
Asked by co-host Dave ‘Hughesy’ Hughes on The Morning Crew with Hughesy, Ed and Erin about reports in The Daily Telegraph over the weekend, Molan at first joked that she was joining the Greens party.
“The Greens and I have decided …” she began.
“No I’m not. I have had conversations. Yes, I was approached and I’ve had a couple of chats with a couple of different people.”
“The Prime Minister does want you to run, I know he does,” Hughesy responded, to which Molan replied: “I can’t speak on behalf of the Prime Minister.”
“It’s incredibly flattering to be considered or for there have been interested in me doing it … Politics maybe down the track is something I might consider,” she added, explaining: “I’m on contract here, and I hope to be on contract with Channel 9.”
Molan has already made her mark in politics, having led a fierce campaign against cyber bullying last year which resulted in new legislation.
“I don’t need to be a politician to help make a difference,” she said today of her success, adding that “down the track, potentially” she might reconsider.
“I’m also a newly single mother with a 3 and a half year old … It would not be practical for me,” she concluded, before quipping: “To be honest it just didn’t pay enough, what can I say?”
The sports reporter revealed in a since-deleted social media post in September that her relationship with homicide Detective Sean Ogilvy had ended. The two share three-year-old daughter Eliza.
Molan’s political connections run deep, having revealed in January that she put herself on a self-imposed booze ban after drunk-dialling former NSW premier Gladys Berejiklian during a girls night out.
Plus, a career in Canberra, where Molan was born, is in the TV star’s blood. Her father, Jim Molan, is a Liberal Senator for NSW and decorated former Army major general.
In 2017, Molan spoke out about her father following his controversial comments surrounding Australia’s immigration strategies.
The retired major general had told 3AW Radio he advocated the suspension of migration from certain “extremist” Islamic nations, prompting several media reports linking his comments to his daughter.
“God, he has done far more than I have ever done or will ever do in my career and he is so distinguished and he served this nation in the military,” Molan said in response to the headlines.
“He’s one of our most decorated soldiers. I just think, ‘Erin Molan’s father?’ That’s actually just ridiculous. Mind you it is kind of cool because I’m like, ‘Hey Papi. You ain’t nobody but my dad’. So I do kind of give him stick.”
