Manchester United’s squad are angry with Erik ten Hag for granting permission to Harry Maguire for a break in Portugal this week to ‘clear his head’.

The defender was unavailable for United’s Europa League clash against Omonia after sustaining a hamstring injury in England’s Nations League draw against Germany.

The centre-back is set for around a fortnight on the sidelines, which is the latest setback in a torrid 12 months for Maguire.

After starting the season as first choice, Maguire has lost his starting spot as Ten Hag relies on Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez at the back.

The Englishman has endured almost endless criticism from supporters during the last year and Ten Hag felt it was best he was given some time off to ‘clear his head’, according to the Sun.

Maguire spent the week in Portugal, with the club providing a physio for him to help him with his recovery.

But the decision was not consistent with Ten Hag’s message to his United squad from the early weeks of his appointment, when he made it clear that all injured players would have to stay in Manchester during their recovery.

The club have encountered problems in recent years when the likes of Bastian Schweinsteiger and Paul Pogba have completed their rehabilitation elsewhere.

And the Dutchman’s decision to break his own rules for Maguire is said to have irked members of the squad.

Ten Hag has given the squad some much needed discipline since replacing Ralf Rangnick but his treatment of Maguire threatens to undermine him.
