England rocked as scans rule Archer out of Ashes

England paceman Jofra Archer has been ruled out of the upcoming Ashes series against Australia due to a stress fracture in his right elbow.

Archer had made his long-awaited return to the international setup earlier this year, but was sent home early from the IPL to have surgery on his elbow.

Subsequent scans have revealed a stress fracture, the third Archer has suffered in the last three years.

“It has been a frustrating and upsetting period for Jofra Archer,” England’s chief selector Rob Key said.

“He was making good progress until a recurrence of the elbow injury, which kept him out for an extended period previously.

“We wish him the best of luck with his recovery. I’m sure we will see Jofra back to his best and winning games for England, whatever the format. Hopefully, sooner rather than later.”

Archer’s confirmed absence comes just days after Jimmy Anderson was forced out of a county clash due to what was deemed a “minor” groin strain. Despite the injury scare, Anderson has been included in the 15-player squad that will face Ireland in a one-off Test prior to the Ashes.

Archer made his Test debut during Australia’s last tour to England and picked up 22 wickets in four Tests at an average of 20.27. He has not played in England’s Test side since February 2021.

FULL ENGLAND SQUAD FOR IRELAND TEST: Ben Stokes (C), Jimmy Anderson, Jonny Bairstow, Stuart Broad, Harry Brook, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Dan Lawrence, Jack Leach, Ollie Pope, Matthew Potts, Ollie Robinson, Joe Root, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood
