England coach’s intense ‘traitor’ run-in with fan

England coach Eddie Jones has been captured berating a heckling spectator after being branded a “traitor” following his side’s series-deciding win over the Wallabies.

Footage of the incident was posted to social media following the 21-17 win at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

The short video shows a fan sporting a Wallabies cap with a beer in hand, starting with the cameraman prompting the spectator to “spray him” as Jones walked past.

“You’re a traitor,” says the unidentified Wallabies fan pointing at Jones.

“What did you say? What did you say?” Jones yelled as he tried to get by security.

“Come here and say it!” he repeated.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Jones said he’d been verbally abused by the same fan at half-time.

The security can be heard saying, “I’ve spoken to you before, walk away”.

Jones told The Herald after the incident, “Clowns think they have full go to abuse coaches”.

Jones was born and raised in Australia and served as the Wallabies coach between 2001 and 2005, including taking the team to the 2003 Rugby World Cup final.

Although this year’s three-match series hasn’t had the same animosity attached between coaches at the last visit by the English in 2016, Jones has had his moments of cheekiness.

“You have got 48,000 people all full of drink and all they want to see is their team win,” Jones jibed after England’s series leveller at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.

“When you turn them away, it is a great experience. A great feeling.

“I was coming out from the coaches’ box and they all have their scarves on. When did Australians start wearing scarves? It is all the rage, isn’t it? They are not so smart now.

“Before the game, they are coming up saying to me, ‘You are going to get belted tonight.’ Now they are a little bit more quiet. So that’s good. I enjoy that.”

Smith turns on the jets for England

Following Saturday’s pivotal four-point win, England captain Courtney Lawes said his side thrived on the Wallabies “talking smack” in the build-up to the finale.

“We fought for each other, we had a great four weeks here, we have really enjoyed ourselves,” said Lawes.

“I mean, they give us a good bit of fuel in the press, to be fair. They were talking smack about us. That motivated us a bit but the boys stuck together, stuck to our guns.

“We didn’t fire that many shots tonight unfortunately but we found a way to win, that’s the big improvement.”
