England all-rounder Moeen Ali all set to return to Test cricket for Ashes

England batting all-rounder, Moeen Ali has been added to the squad for first two matches of Ashes. Ali had announced retirement from test cricket in September 2021. However, Ali, England’s key player in white ball cricket is making a return to test, replacing Jack Leach who sustained a low back stress fracture.

Announcing this, Rob Key, Managing Director of England Men’s Cricket, said “We reached out to Mo (Moeen Ali) early this week about returning to Test cricket. Having had a couple of days to reflect, Mo is excited to join the squad and play Test cricket again. His vast experience, along with his all-round ability, will benefit our Ashes campaign.

“We wish Mo and the rest of the squad well for the Ashes campaign,” he added.

Following Sam Leach’s unavailability for Ashes due to injury, Ali, has reversed his decision following discussions with Test Captain Ben Stokes, Test Head Coach Brendon McCullum and Managing Director of England Men’s Cricket Rob Key.

The 35-year-old off-spinner made his Test debut in 2014 and has scored 2,914 runs and has picked 195 wickets in the 64 tests that he has played for England. While Moeen brings his vast experience to the England team, Leach’s injury remains a setback as pacer Jofra Archer was ruled out of the 16-member squad for Ashes. The England party will report to Birmingham on Monday 12 June. They are due to practice at Edgbaston from Tuesday 13 June. Australia, however, will report post the World Test Championship final, which begins today. The Men’s Ashes Test matches against Australia starting at Edgbaston on Friday 16 June 2023.
