Endeavour star Sara Vickers speaks out after recent love triangle drama sparks ‘uproar’
Sara Vickers, 36, has discussed her eight years on the ITV show and why her character has lasted as long as she has. The star also acknowledged that there was a “mixed response” to her character’s newfound romance with Jim Strange (Sean Rigby), as opposed to her on-screen relationship with titular character Inspector Endeavour Morse (Shaun Evans).
Sara’s character Joan is the daughter of a young Endeavour’s friend and mentor, Fred Thursday (Roger Allam).
Fans have long speculated about a possible romance between the pair, but these hopes were dashed in September when she began getting closer to Police Chief Superintendent Jim.
“I know there has been a bit of a mixed response to the Joan/Jim situation,” Sara admitted.
“Endeavour has had lots of dalliances along the way and Joan’s had one difficult relationship with a married man so you knew that was never going to end well…

Speaking about the chemistry between Joan and Endeavour, Sara suggested that the inspector had not yet fully shown his hand.
“There’s this odd game that Joan and Endeavour have been playing for a long time – with him being kind of closed off and not quite putting his cards on the table,” she said.
“When Shaun Evans and I talk about it he always says to me, ‘This is clearly all Joan’s fault’ and I’m like, ‘No, no, no, this is all your fault!’”
The relationship between Endeavour and Joan is somewhat tragic, as she had previously rejected his hand in marriage, only to be thrown down the stairs by her abusive boyfriend soon after.
Sara seems to approve of Joan’s relationship with Jim despite the controversy, as she said: “He’s such a down-to-earth, dependable guy, he’s funny, he makes her laugh and he’s sweet and caring.”
She admitted thinking “Is this going to work?” and “Are people going to buy into this?” at first.
But, apparently, once they read through their scenes together she thought: “‘Oh my God!’”
“Sean just does it so well that you totally buy into it,” she added.
