Matt Willis is opening up about his struggles with addiction in a new BBC documentary.

Taking part in the programme, which covers the tough subject matter wasn’t an easy decision for one special person in his life – Matt’s wife Emma needed convincing to take part in the show.

The 40-year-old explained to Lorraine Kelly, while appearing on her show why Emma initially had some reservations.

‘Emma took some talking to, to get involved in this,’ he began.

‘We’ve been quite private with our lives, and not really opened up before. I felt like that was such a powerful part of it. She went through everything with me.’

Emma, 47, decided to take part and viewers will now get a new insight into their marriage.

Matt explained that whilst they’re happy now, they survived some tricky years.

‘She stuck by me through everything,’ he revealed.

While Emma was steadfast in her decision to stick by Matt, not everyone in her life agreed.

‘A lot of people at times told her not to, but she saw something in me and that she could help. She did massively.’

Matt, who has now been sober for more than five years, still has concerns about setbacks.

‘I’m always a bit worried about relapse,’ he explained.

Matt has made amendments to this life in order to give himself the best possible chance: ‘I have certain things in places every day which I’m very particular about. I feel like I have to be.’

He continued: ‘I feel quite selfish at times because it’s my main priority, but without that, everything else falls to pieces.’

He’s also supported by his Busted bandmates James Bourne and Charlie Simpson.

‘Luckily the boys are amazing and they love me, and they want me to be well.

‘We have a job to do, so it’s in everyone’s interest that I’m not wrecked,’ he candidly concluded.

Lorraine airs weekdays from 9am on ITV. Matt Willis: Fighting Addiction will air on BBC One and iPlayer tonight at 9pm.
