Emma Thompson saved the day after noticing Coronation guest struggling

Dame Emma Thompson, 64, was one of many well-known faces who attended Westminster Abbey yesterday to witness King Charles III being crowned.

The veteran actress accidentally played a key role during the event, as she reportedly helped a fellow guest who was suffering a coughing fit, by giving them a cough sweet.

Celebrity Gogglebox star and friend of the Royal Family Gyles Brandreth, 75, recounted the moment she scrambled to find the sweet in her bag.

Gyles said: “I thought ‘What’s going to happen now’ and Dame Emma Thompson was fumbling in her bag and produced a cough sweet which was then passed down the row and given to the cougher – then they stopped, which was wonderful, because we were having such music”.

Gyles went on to describe the “magnificent” Coronation, which, according to him, left many guests unable to contain their emotion.

He added to the BBC following the event: “It was deeply moving to be there in the place where for 1000 years and more, sovereigns have all been crowned, and to witness the crowning of King Charles III and Queen Camilla.

“I looked around at that very moment and there were tears in a lot of people’s eyes, it was a very moving moment, a magnificent day, but a human day as well.”

After the emotional day, the Prince and Princess of Wales have also released a touching video commemorating the Coronation of King Charles.

In the glossy video, just over a minute long, Prince William and Kate Middleton can be seen with Prince Louis, their youngest son, and Princess Charlotte.

Their eldest son, Prince George, does not appear until the family are seen in their carriage between Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace.

The video is captioned: “What. A. Day. Thank you to everyone who made it happen #Coronation”.

The Royal couple’s adoring Twitter followers couldn’t contain their glee at the gorgeous video.

One user wrote: “Spectacular! Well done all of you, especially Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.”

Another said: “You both did us extremely proud, the future of our monarchy is secure.”

Glowing, a third wrote: “Fabulous compilation — thank you! A glorious day for King and Country. Thank you for ‘owning’ your roles so well. The children are so beautiful and charming. Hope you enjoy the rest of the #CoronationWeekend”.
