Emma Thompson admits ‘it’s still s**t’ to be an older actress

Emma Thompson, 64, has admitted she thinks the industry isn’t any better for older actresses working today.

Asked if she thinks it’s a good time to be an older female actress, she confirmed that she did not believe much had improved for women in the world of showbiz.

“No, no I don’t,” she replied frankly, as she spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk at the Gala Night at the London Coliseum. “It’s still just s**t.”

Emma, who hasn’t been afraid to speak up about ageist remarks she’s received in the past, has frequently had to deal with sexism in the entertainment sector.

When she was 36 years old, Emma starred alongside Hugh Grant, then 35, in the 1995 adaptation of Jane Austin’s Sense and Sensibility.

According to Emma at the time, Hollywood’s attitude towards age hasn’t improved at all, and she still seems to feel the same way.

She said in the same interview: “The age thing is insane.

“I remember saying years and years ago, when I was 35, that they’d have to exhume somebody to play my leading man…

“Nothing’s changed in that regard. If anything, it’s got worse.”

Other actresses have spoken out about this issue, with Helen Mirren once branding the problem as “outrageous” at TheWrap’s Power Breakfast back in 2015.

“It’s ridiculous. And ’twas ever thus,” she said. “We all watched James Bond as he got more and more geriatric, and his girlfriends got younger and younger. It’s so annoying.”

We Will Rock You will run from June 2 to August 26 at the London Coliseum.
